Of course, it's not always appropriate to use the strict IUPAC nomenclature, sometimes it's better to just use the common or trivial name. A really good example of why you would want to do this is when you start naming proteins:

The chemical name for tryptophan synthetase A protein, a 1,913-letter enzyme with 267 amino acids.

(Actually, any biochemist worth their citric acid cycle would talk about the structure of this enzyme using the one-letter abbreviations for each amino acid residue - i.e., IQNATLRAFAAGVTPAQCEMLALIRQKHPTIPIGLLMYANLVFNKGIDEFYAQCEKVGVDSVLVADVPVQESAPFRQAALRHNVAPIFICPPDADDDLLRQIASYGRGYTYLLSRAGVTGAENRALPLNHLVAKLKEYNAAPPLQGFGISAPDQVKAAIDAGAAGAISGSAIVKIIEQHNIEPEKMLAALKVFVQPMKAATRS)
