Sodium laureth sulfate is a new style surfactant, which combines a nonionic surfactant with an anionic head group. The reason for doing this is to improve the behaviour of the surfactants in hard water. It also helps to improve the behaviour of the nonionic surfactants by increasing the range of temperatures over which they are soluble.
